An Upside Down World

Yesterday’s Poetics prompt at dVerse Poets Pub was to choose one of four paintings by Chagall and write an ekphrastic poem. My focus this year is surreality. As Chagall’s dream imagery had an influence on the surrealists, I felt inspired to start my surreality posts with a poem to this prompt.

Return to an Upside-down World

“emerging from the internal being outward, from the seen object
to the psychic outpouring”~Jean Leymarie

We each wear our beads, bear our crosses
count our blessings
Our pink mouths in the circle
mouths as pink as the road into town
a circle of life
I feed you
You feed me
The farmer returns to an upside-down world
His scythe, heavy on his shoulder, holds his back leg to the road
When he is far behind us, I bring offerings,
but you ache, yearning only for the milkmaid
I am green to you
